I started photography after getting a Russian Zenith 12XP one Christmas when I was 10. This wonderfully solid manual camera was perfect for learning the ropes and it wasn’t long before I won a local photo competition.
At school, I joined the Photographic Society and did my time developing and printing in the darkroom before getting my own darkroom at the age of 15. This attention to the basics of exposure, contrast and composition stood me in good stead as I began shooting more and more landscape and nature images.
My move to digital photography has been a relatively recent event. Previously, I had been shooting transparency stock, not surprisingly favouring Fuji Velvia for landscape work. Trading my Nikon film camera for a Nikon digital meant the same familiar MO but with a greatly streamlined, super-versatile workflow. Coupled with the Apple systems I love, I’m now free to create, take work with me and show to clients anytime.
Experiencing my wife’s incredible pregnancy and being present at the birth really illustrated the blossoming beauty of the pregnant female form and I now shoot maternity photography in the South-West of England covering Cornwall and Devon. This incredibly rewarding work, often with couples in the last few weeks of their third trimester, brings together everything I love in photography; life, nature, beauty and creativity.
